Site Plot/Settings:
Non-humans and magic have always existed on Earth, but never has there been such a large dimension disturbance.
Earth, 2012, Dec 21st. A portal between worlds opens up. A medieval world on the brink of destruction. Refugees pour into every Earth continent. Various governments keep them under lock and key, until they can decide what to do with them. Various inter-dimensional disturbances change the landscape...forests spring up in strange places, mountain ranges grow larger, dragons and demons escape into the land.
Los Angeles, 2024: Elen Galad refugees are settling into their new home with government allowances. Many shun technology. Some live in medieval villages outside the city, others try to integrate into human society. Dragons find employment and become part of society while the government continues to cover up the existence of magic and 'abnormal' creatures. Demons, monsters and wild dragons hunt the forests outside Los Angeles, and only air travel is safe. Yet the world goes on, and humans stubbornly cling to their ideals and their lives.

FAQ
Questions will be added as we think of them or if people ask them often enough. Where there are pages answering the question, they will simply be linked here.
------ About
:. What is Elen Galad? Elen Galad is a text-based roleplaying site where people are encouraged to plot and write with other people. It is set in Los Angeles in 2024 and involves fantasy and supernatural elements as well as modern elements. It is 12 years after a lot of refugees poured into our world from an exploding medieval world. Millions of plot opportunities. See the plot page and the Species/World Universe Information page for more detailed information.
:. Why is it called Elen Galad? It's kind of a stupid name... Yes, it is a bit of a stupid name, because it has little relevance to anything, but we thought it sounded nice. We just put two Elvish words together, because originally this was partly a medieval fantasy website. It is Elvish for Star Light. We came up with this plot later, and named the medieval world which was being destroyed...’Elen Galad’. Even though no elves lived there. Hmm.
:. How do I sign up? We're glad you decided to join! All you've got to do is invent a character, read the rules and plot, and fill out a biography template. Our 'How to Join' page is a very detailed, step-by-step list on what to do.
Biographies/Characters
:. The biography template is too bloody confusing! Help? If the coding is too confusing (we've tried to make it simplistic since we're not coding geniuses either), you can look at the example above it (how it would turn out using the coding) and copy it. Use the same headings, make sure the same information is intact, and make sure your biography is neat. We aren't going to look kindly on hard to read biographies. No weird fonts or large/small.
:. Not everyone has used the biography template! We only just put it there, so we're still updating, though we might not even bother, if we think our biographies are fine enough. We’ve been slowly changing ours over, though.
:. Can I use a Canon from a book/TV show? Yes, as long as they fit. For example, this Universe is different to Anita Blake’s Universe. It does, however, fit Buffy’s Universe (in fact we want some slayers for the Government to employ). You can say Anita came from another dimension. Read this page if you have more questions.
:. Can my characters jump dimensions easily? We would prefer it if it was difficult to do this. Yes, you may, but come up with something plausible.
:. Can I have my big anthropomorphic tiger man walking around Los Angeles? ...no. The government will lock him up. Sure, sign up as one, but the government will want to have a word with him, I’m sure. That and he will scare everybody. The government is probably experimenting with humans but I doubt they’ve gone as far as to make anthropomorphic tigers, so he’d have to come from another dimension.
:. Why can't I copy and paste Wikipedia for my canon/celebrity/musician? It saves time! Tough biscuits. We want you to be able to understand your character, and add your own influence to them. Think of yourself as an actor; you're adding personal flavour to that character while staying within their personality, context and history. To do that well, and to plot well, you should be able to write a decent biography about them in your own words. You can reference from Wikipedia, and other sources, but don't copy and paste.
:. Why can't I sign up as a celebrity I hate and beat them up? Not only is this devoid of mature plot, but it's stupid, it's cruel and its ridiculous. It's petty.
:. My original character has heaps of powers. I'm reluctant to ditch any. Give them plenty of weaknesses. Avoid the Mary Sue at all costs. Also give your character emotional complexity; do they feel their powers are harming them, are they scared of them, corrupted by them? Is it ruining their life? Family? Mates? Partner? etc.
:. My original character is Spike and Buffy's daughter/Anita Blake's lover etc and those characters aren't signed up or I haven't consulted them. I don't want to change this, I invented this character years ago. Tough bloody biccies. This is called godmoding, or playing someone else's character by inventing their history for them. Even if the person isn't signed up (because then they’re in for a nasty surprise when they DO sign up). We sometimes NPC Buffy and such but so minimally we'll ditch it out of the storyline completely if someone signs up. However, I'm sure if you ask pre-existing members you want your character to be connected to, they might be kind. Use the plot page or private message them.
Writing posts
:. When I type into a text box and my post is lengthy, the words take ages to show up, it's so slow! It's because of the preview... Sorry, we like the preview for formatting. We use a word processing programme such as MS word or Notepad and then copy and paste it here. We also save it as we go. This prevents postage lost, which is a real pain.
:. Do we have to write posts as long as some of the admins'? Those are awfully long... Hell no. We sometimes go way overboard. We know each others' characters so well by now we sometimes godmode a little, with consent. Mild godmoding. Never dialogue. Just do a minimum of 6 lines or a good paragraph, though we would prefer at least 3 paragraphs of good text so the other person can react to your post.
:. I want to use pretty colours in my post? As long as it is visible, readable without headache, and pleasant.
My character speaks in another language often. Can I type this? Yes, but you must provide a translation and we'd prefer you posted in English. Two of my characters sometimes speak in Irish, but mostly in English. At the end we might put a translation (In the order of where it was posted).
Eg:
James: Dia duit, a hAleria! Conas atá tú innui? (Hello, Aleria, how are you today?) Aleria: Táim go maith, go raibh maith agat, a James! Agus tú? (I'm well, thankyou, James! And you?) James: Níl go maith... (Not well....)
Be aware that some people cannot read things like fadas (Irish: áéúíó). Please take the other reader into account. For some, they show up as boxes, not text.
Graphics
:. Why can't I use large graphics? Large graphics stretch the board. Sometimes it's difficult to help it...if it stretches it ridiculously, then we will delete it or change the size. It also takes some people a while to load graphics.
:. How do I get a Cbox avatar? Click here for the tutorial.
:. I don't have a character model. That's fine. Give us a really good description in your biography.
Characterisation
:. What is powerplaying? Powerplaying is when your character is unbeatable and has too many powers. You need to have some weaknesses to have a believable character? Why? Not only is it annoying for other roleplayers when you rip them apart and beat everything they do. It's also boring for you eventually, unless you're some sort of power maniac, because characters should be developed through roleplay. They need to be involved in conflicts and be challenged to grow, and frankly, nobody is perfect.
:. Why have you declined my biography for 'Mary Sue/Gary Stu reasons'? They are annoying! You probably have a million powers and no weaknesses, everybody loves them, or everybody is expected to pity them. It's rare we'll be horrible enough to decline you, unless it's really, really crap. You will likely be sent a private message about it.
